Ramos is the outcome of four summers photographer Julio Bittencourt spent in Rio de Janeiro registering Piscinão de Ramos’s sunbathers. His photographic vision devoid of prejudices and irony accomplish a unique portrait of this unusual place, where people enjoy good times of leisure while simultaneously dealing with issues such as violence and pollution. At the end, an afterword by the photographer Martin Parr comments this photobook’s powerful pictures.
JULIO BITTENCOURT was born in Brazil in 1980, but spent his youth in New York. His first book, In a window of Prestes Maia 911 building (2008), won several prizes, such as Leica Oskar Barnack Award, and his work has appeared in renowned publications, such as Leica World Magazine, Esquire, The New Yorker, TIME, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal and Zum, among others.
